A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” declared the country's president.
The president confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose term finished the year before. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The building of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its role in national works. They were completed at an rapid pace, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party demanded an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."
In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic projects.
