Based on new study, the median employee in the UK would need 52 years' worth of income to reach the wealth level of the richest 10% of the population.
Growing Economic Disparity Through the Years
The analysis examined wealth distribution statistics including the recent health crisis years and discovered that during the mid-2000s, it would have taken 38 years' worth of average worker salary to reach the top 10th of the economic ladder.
A research lead part of the analysis observed: "Financial divides in Britain are currently so significant that a average worker saving all their earnings during their working years would continue to be incapable to reach the top of the financial hierarchy."
Assessing the Financial Disparity
The study found that the difference between the wealth of the median citizen and someone in the richest segment was £1 million in 2006-08, but had expanded to £1.3 million in actual value by recent times.
The analyst continued: "These disparities are especially alarming as wealth mobility in Britain is limited – individuals who begin life well-off tend to remain affluent, and vice versa."
Proportional Economic Disparity
Despite the economic divide widening in specific figures, the portion of total wealth in the UK possessed by the richest households – called "proportional economic disparity" – has been "largely unchanged since the eighties," as stated in the study.
During this period, overall assets in the UK increased dramatically from thrice the gross domestic product, to almost 7.5 times.
Drivers of Financial Divide
So-called "unearned" increases, via increasing property values and changes in superannuation evaluations, were the main drivers of the widening wealth gap since 2010, per the analysis.
These increases tended to accrue to elderly homeowners, the research shows – worsening the age-based economic gap.
Intergenerational Financial Divides
The median economic difference between thirty-somethings and sixty-somethings more than doubled in real terms, from £135,000 in 2006-08, to 310 thousand pounds.
Regional Disparities
Furthermore, the study revealed significant regional variations, with the median value of wealth in 2020-22 standing at £290,000 in the SE of England, where real estate values have generally grown substantially, versus 110 thousand pounds in the northeastern region.
Pandemic Period Consequences
Amid the health crisis, when numerous employees were supported by the government-supported job retention program, and Covid shutdowns reduced expenditure possibilities, the statistics indicate many households were able to save, growing their net worth.
More affluent homes fared much better, however. "The typical family in the bottom income bracket saw their available funds rise by merely £80 throughout the health crisis (across the pandemic timeframe), roughly identical to the pre-crisis period. On the other hand, the typical family in the top income bracket saw their available funds grow by 4,200 pounds," the report finds.
