The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
