'Was That Not a Show?' The Reason a Shortened Test Remained Every Bit a Genuine Test.

In a display cabinet on the third floor of the Melbourne Cricket Ground rests a neon pink outfit donned by the pop star. The concert in front of a hundred thousand attendees was considered a major hit.

Perhaps you don't appreciate the performer. You might think he is the ultimate present to music the world has ever seen. Or you could adopt a reasonable stance, admitting that some songs are belting while others are terrible.

The point being is that enjoyment can manifest in countless ways. Tastes vary. There is no universal formula to craft art or even five-day cricket.

The Peerless Spectrum of The Test Format

The traditional format boasts unrivalled depth. It is hard to think of another sport where the playing is so reliant upon external factors.

The weather, the time of day, the cricket ball – the list is endless. Above all is the pitch.

If the long game is an artistic pursuit, the wicket is the blank slate on which the players craft their legacy.

A Test of Cubism: The MCG Match

The fourth Ashes Test between Australia and England was an abstract version of cricket, the traditional sport dismantled and stuck back together in a bizarre shape.

This is not a justification of the pitch which resulted in a victory and the another short match of the Ashes battle.

Leaving 10mm of grass on the pitch, causing a cascade of wickets being taken in less than six sessions, is not an even battle between bat and ball.

A Rich Tapestry: The Core of Test Cricket

But any suggestion this was a diminished spectacle, one that should be qualified as inauthentic, is wide of the mark.

The format is a varied portfolio, a long history and ongoing. Sometimes, like in Melbourne, the cricket ball does all sorts for the pace bowlers. Sometimes, it spins sharply on a dry surface. Sometimes, the pitch is dead, other times it spits like a cobra.

The exciting finishes are even more exciting due to the time made elsewhere.

Problem Solving: The Core Skill

Some factors are tolerated more easily than others.

The argument in during the match was that the contest was weighted unfairly towards the bowlers. That the skilled individuals were unable from showcasing their talents.

Test cricket is about finding solutions – assessing the conditions and adapting effectively. The top two individual contributions were made by recognized stars. One side made more mistakes than the other, and thus ended up second best.

Unbridled Joy: The Supporters' View

Attempt to convince the fans who have experienced a long drought that this lacked spectacle.

In one section of the MCG, a sea of people celebrated and created an atmosphere, generating a festive mood in a stronghold of sport.

There was optimism as the attack excelled, advantage when players fought back, and pure joy when the win was secured.

Polar Opposites: The Range of Test Matches

The MCG has form with difficult wickets. Eight years ago, a Test there featured a pitch with all the life of a a non-event.

That contest was a marathon, with few wickets and interminable tedium. The latest encounter and that previous match are diametrically opposed points of the range – both are not the standard, yet historical weight can be attached to both.

Deep into the series into the Ashes contest, it is the two-day matches that will be most remembered in the history books.

"This isn't the death of the format at all," said a past champion. "Fans who have been lucky enough to see these two days have been given some genuine drama. A unique show."

Small Victories: Building for the Future

In the preparation to this Test, the captain addressed the media like a man carrying the enormous pressure on his mind.

The squad delivered for him, bringing back the positive demeanor to his persona.

New faces performed with key contributions. These are small positives, not nearly enough to secure long-term success, but a starting point to use as a platform.

Ultimately, this triumph takes its place among other notable performances in dead rubbers.

As the fans slipped away into a beautiful night, the team congregated on the turf to begin their own enjoyment.

Celebrate the win, men. You've earned this one.
